Identify and explain the function, role, and philosophy of library public and technical service areas

Library public service areas are those that deal directly with serving the public, such as aiding with research at the reference desk, providing reader’s advisory services, or teaching classes and running programs.  Staff in these areas always strive to put the patron’s needs first.

Technical service areas are those that work behind the scenes to get the materials on the shelves and keep the library running.  Philosophy here is not much different than the philosophy of public service areas: the needs of the patron come first.  However, technical services staff play more of a support role in seeing that those needs are met.


Though the documents linked below do not directly “identify and explain” public and technical service areas, they do demonstrate my ability to do so through application of my understanding.
